Tough Outdoors Mummy Sleeping Bag: The Basics
Okay, so what’s the big deal with the Tough Outdoors mummy sleeping bag and why did we even take the time to review it? Here are some of the Tough Outdoor mummy sleeping bag’s most important specs:
- Temperature Comfort Rating: 40-60 degrees Fahrenheit
- Insulation: Synthetic
- Dimensions: 87 x 32 inches
- Weight: 3 pounds
- Maximum Height: 6’6”
- Shape: Mummy
First Impressions
Upon opening up our new Tough Outdoors mummy sleeping bag, we were immediately impressed with the color combination and the feel of the bag. The shell fabric is soft, yet feels durable to the touch, and looks ready to head outside.
Something that stood out to us, especially when compared to other sleeping bags is the width of this model. Unlike other mummy sleeping bags, which tend to be quite form-fitting, this bag form Tough Outdoors seemed very spacious, right off the bat, which boded well for a great night’s sleep.
Perhaps the one immediate downside we notice to this bag is the included compression sack. Although Tough Outdoors was nice enough to provide us with a compression sack, the design of the sack itself was a bit tricky to use and didn’t really seem to compress the bag as much as we would’ve wanted. But, it’s always possible to get a new stuff sack, so we’d consider this an excusable fault.
Performance
A sleeping bag is only as good as its performance in the great outdoors. Here’s how the Tough Outdoors Mummy sleeping bag performed in some of the most important sleeping bag categories:
Warmth
This sleeping bag features a comfort rating of 40-65 degrees Fahrenheit with an extreme temperature rating of 32 degrees Fahrenheit. This means that you can get a good night’s sleep between 40 and 60 degrees, but if the mercury drops well below that range, you’ll be fine, just not comfortable.
As far as a sleeping bag goes, this is a fairly normal temperature range for a summer weight bag, but Tough Outdoors advertises this bag as a “three season” model. Depending on where you live, you might be able to use this sleeping bag during the fall and spring, but for most of us with seasonal temperature changes, this is going to be more of a summerweight bag.
Weight
At three pounds, this sleeping bag isn’t light, by any measure. The lightest 40 degree sleeping bags on the market tip the scales at just about one pound or less, so the Tough Outdoors mummy sleeping bag isn’t winning any ultralight awards anytime soon.
However, if you’re mostly a car camper, these extra pounds might not make much of a difference. Since a lot of the weight in this sleeping bag comes from the extra width and length of the design, the extra pounds might just be worth it for your nighttime comfort.
Comfort
As we’ve previously mentioned, one of the main selling points of the Tough Outdoors mummy sleeping bag is that it has a large design, which makes it easier for taller people to get comfortable at night. Plus, thanks to its wide width at the shoulders and hips, the Tough Outdoors mummy sleeping bag is a great option for anyone who tosses and turns at night and doesn’t want to feel constrained while camping.
Packability
Due to its synthetic insulation, the Tough Outdoors mummy sleeping bag isn’t the most packable bag. In fact, when fully compressed in its stuff sack, this sleeping bag still takes up about 10L of space. As far as backpackers are concerned, this is quite a lot of room to take up in a backpack. However, in the world of car camping, this is actually quite compact, so it really depends on what kind of camping you’re looking to do.
Versatility
Thanks to the bag’s synthetic insulation, the Tough Outdoors mummy sleeping bag is a good option for use in wet environments. Plus, the bag features a durable ripstop waterproof shell so you don’t have to worry about it getting soaked in damp conditions.
However, the bag’s low packability and relatively heavy weight mean that it’s really best used as a car camping sleeping bag instead of one to take on an extended expedition.
Features
The Tough Outdoors mummy sleeping bag is decidedly simple, though it does have some nifty features. The bag has a small inner storage pocket so you can keep your car keys and phone accessible throughout the night.
Plus, it has a soft non-scratchy woven liner and a drawcord hood to help you stay warm and comfortable at night. What’s not to love?
Value
Value is where the Tough Outdoors mummy sleeping bag really shines. This sleeping bag is one of the most affordable around, making it great for families that love to get outside but don’t quite want to spend their life’s savings to do so.
The Verdict
While we wouldn’t pack the Tough Outdoors mummy sleeping bag on our next big mountain expedition, we’d certainly take it along on a summer car camping adventure. Warm, comfortable, and incredibly spacious, this sleeping bag turns a night under the stars into a luxurious escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Oh, and it’s so affordable, you’d be hard-pressed to find a reason not to love it.
