Trying to survive on this planet without encountering rain is hard, to say the least. Whether you live in a place that gets rain all year long or are lucky enough to only have to worry about rain on certain days, a rain jacket is a welcomed companion.

North Face was created in 1966 by a couple of outdoor adventure enthusiasts who decided to follow their passion and create a sustainable outdoor brand. Due to their consistent longevity and sustained success in the market, it’s fair to say, they know their stuff when it comes to outdoor gear.

If you’re in the market for a rain jacket, North Face is a great place to start. The Venture and Resolve are similar in design and quality, however, they have their differences. If you’re looking for a functional rain jacket that does the job, we’ve taken a deep dive into each jacket so you can make the best decision.

North Face Venture vs North Face Resolve

Both the North Face Venture and the North Face Resolve are popular rain jackets that are loaded with features. We’re going to get into the similarities and differences to help you make an informed decision.

Weight

The last thing that you want is a heavy rain jacket. The original rain jackets were bulky, made completely of heavy rubber, lacked breathability, and limited your mobility. There’s a reason that those are rarely found these days, they were cumbersome and uncomfortable.

The North Face Venture 2 weighs in at sixteen ounces and the Resolve 2 comes in at 17.3 ounces. Both of these are considered lightweight rain jackets.

  • North Face Venture 2 weighs 16 ounces
  • North Face Resolve 2 weight 17.3 ounces

Waterproofing

Being that these are both North Face jackets, they use the same waterproofing technology, North Face’s DryVent technology. DryVent fabrics are designed to be windproof, waterproof, and breathable. Where they differ is the amount of layering incorporated into the jackets.

The outer layer of both jacket are coated with a DWR finish that forces that water to form droplets while repelling them at the same time. These fabrics are engineered to allow a high level of protection with a balance of comfort and performance.

  • North Face Venture 2 uses 2.5-layer DryVent waterproof breathable laminate
  • North Face Resolve 2 uses 2-layer DryVent waterproof breathable laminate

Waterproof Rating

Waterproof ratings are generally determined by the manufacturer or the clothing producer and then tested either in-house or by a third party testing company. The testing protocols vary, however, most tests use a 1′ x 1′ square sheet of the fabric and applying water until it begins to leak.

North Face uses a waterproof rating in PSI, or pounds per square inch. Keep in mind, that different labs may report the same test with different results, so take them with a grain of salt.

  • Both the Venture and Resolve have a PSI rating of 25 PSI minimum after 20 washes

Breathability

Waterproof breathable fabrics are made with an outer layer referred to as the “face fabric” which is typically made of nylon or polyurethane and a laminated membrane or coating.

The face fabric is there to give you protection and is treated with DWR, which helps repel water and keep it from soaking into the material. The membrane has tiny holes to let water vapor (sweat) escape and is protected with an ultra-thin layer of Polyurethane or oleophobic (oil-hating) treatment.

2 layer fabrics have a separate fabric liner and 2.5 layer fabrics use a screened pattern on the inside to save on weight. Modern fabrics have made leaps and bounds of progress when compared to the first iterations of rain gear.

  • North Face Venture 2 breathability rating: 750-800 g/m²/24 hours average
  • North Face Resolve 2 breathability rating: 750-800 g/m²/24 hours average

Back length

Normally the back length of a jacket isn’t that much of a concern, however, with rain jackets, it’s definitely a feature to pay attention to. A rain jacket is meant to be used in the rain (duh) and a short back length translates into a wet behind. Ideally, you want it to extend down further than a standard jacket to at least the hips and both of these jackets offer decent coverage.

  • Both jackets are measured at a hip length of 29 inches

Packability

Hopefully, it’s not going to rain the entire time that you’re outside, and while carrying around a jacket or tying it around your works, it gets old quick. Being able to store a jacket in a backpack is a great option, however, having the ability to pack it into itself, or a pocket is way easier.

  • The North Face Venture 2 packs into one of the front pockets
  • The North Face Resolve 2 packs into the hood of the jacket

Which lightweight rain jacket is right for you?
